What is mauling baby 'possums?

There are baby opossums living under our deck...unclear whether or not any adults are with them; we have never seen the adults, only the babies, and we often hear them making the "CHEE" cry that apparently may mean they have been orphaned? This morning we discovered one of the babies out in the yard, killed. The face and snout were removed; the bottom jaw and the rest of the body were untouched. Is there a predator that would maul an animal like this? We do have raccoons in the area, but I've never seen them kill anything and not eat it.
