An earl is a PEER not a monarch.Peers were appointed by the monarch as a reward for helping monarch and country.Some peers were related to the monarch while others were not.All the peers had to do was win lands,earn monies,earn allegiance,for crown and country.The more a peer did,the higher the peerage ranking.
