Why are opossums such weird creatures?

I'm referring to the American opossum or "possum" as it is called. Why are they so weird? They look like predators, have sharp claws, and dagger like teeth, but are barely capable of killing a chicken. You'd think that an animal that looks and hisses so viciously would be able to hold its own, but rather it gets killed while it does nothing or plays dead.
