Nouns beginning with a silent vowel: "a" or "an"?

The only word that I can think of which applies here is opossum, commonly pronounced "possum." Would I write "an opossum" or "a opossum?" I realize the word can be spelled with or without the "o," but I'm wanting to know about the case of the spelling with the "o."
