How does the game save import from infamous to infamous 2 work?

I've beaten infamous playing as a hero and plan on finishing the game as infamous very soon (before I pick up the sequel) and I am confused as to how the game decides (or how it will let me decide) on which save version to pick to give rewards to. I want all of the hero rewards because I enjoy playing that version of Cole more. I know what the rewards are so no need for those to be listed, but for someone who has infamous 2 and has done this could you please explain how it works so that I don't make a mistake when the time comes for me to do it.
