How do I get my computer to recognize my new SATA hard drive?

I’m not very good with computers and I just tried to install a new 500GB hard drive. I connected it to the SATA ports and plugged in the power cord, but it does not show up when I try to find it or save something to it. It shows my primary hard drive and my disk drive, but not my second hard drive. I rechecked the cables and ran the “detect new hardware” utility, but it did not work. After all those attempts failed I tried something else. I put on my ceremonial robe, built and alter and sacrificed a new inkjet printer with my Blade of Tezcatlipoca. Then I drank the ink from its cartridges and performed the ancient Aztec Jaguar Dance. Unfortunately, it did not work. The computer still would not recognize the new hard drive. What else could I do?
